Tieton River Rafting
[ Whitewater Trips | Accommodations | Tieton Photo Gallery ]
The Tieton River will keep you cool in the heat of Yakima's Indian summer. Fueled by water released from Rimrock Dam, the Tieton's steep gradient produces 14 miles of narrow and swift Class III+ whitewater leading to the Naches River. Eastern Washington is a dry place by the end of the summer and farmers use the water released for irrigation.
Rafting on the mighty Tieton River
• Season: August 28 - September 13 (2015 season)
Fall brings the turning of leaves and a nice warm Indian Summer that gets us excited as the release of Rimrock Dam sets the Tieton River roaring. The river only runs white water once a year while the rest of the time it is a creek so shallow you can walk across in places. Guests get the thrill of paddling down a flooded canyon watching the river banks and canyon walls fly past. During this time the river has a solid Class III+ rating. Its path is small and narrow with the steepest gradient in Washington State, providing fast moving water and big waves. On these whitewater trips, we raft 14 miles down river from our base camp near Rimrock Dam to the confluence of the Naches River. The river never slows down as you make your way through the likes of "High Noon" and "Waffle Wall." We even run our rafts over a river-wide dam for a big splash that's sure to get everyone in the boat totally soaked (pictured at right). Just before we reach the dam our rafts pull over on a small island for a river-side lunch. Unique oak forests and huge basalt cliffs give this trip a flavor all its own.
We meet for the Tieton river near the town of Naches outside of Yakima, WA. Instead of waking up early and having to rush to get here, you can leave the night before your trip and set up camp near our outpost next to the river. Tieton River trips are available Friday August 29th through Sunday September 14th. A great way to spend Labor Day Weekend! For meeting location information for Tieton River whitewater rafting trips, see the Information & Maps page. These trips fill up fast since the river can only be run for 30 days a year! Don't wait! Preferred accommodations for rafting on the Tieton River
The best place to stay when rafting on the Tieton River with Alpine Adventures is right on the river's edge at our private put-in and camping area (pictured above). There is quite a bit of room for tents and car-camping but space is limited so car-pool if possible and come early to get a good spot. Our Tieton River outpost (put-in and camping spot) is locationed near the town of Naches outside of Yakima, WA. For directions to our private put-in and camping area, download the "Tieton River Directions & Location Map" on the Information & Maps page.
