The Classes of Whitewater

Whitewater classes are meant to provide a standardized description that is used for determining the level of difficulty and danger when navigating a particular stretch of river.  The rivers we raft are fed by snowmelt during the Spring and Summer months, therefore no two seasons are identical.  In the Spring months, the water levels are higher which causes larger waves and more thrilling whitewater. By mid-late summer, water levels drop opening up more options for younger and less-experienced rafters.  Water levels and river conditions can change quickly and dramatically, especially in the Spring months, and trip adjustments may be made as necessary for the safety of everyone involved.

Class

1

Beginner:  Serene, calm river.  No waves.

Class

2

Beginner:  Small waves, minimal obstacles. Easy wave riding.

Class

3

Beginner / Intermediate:  More waves, more obstacles, faster flow. Challenging & exciting.

Class

4

Intermediate / Advanced:  Larger waves and more obstacles that require purposeful navigation to avoid. Fast current that offers advanced whitewater action.

Class

5

Advanced / Expert:  Requires a high level of skill to navigate safely through and around large waves, over and past large rocks and boulders, and more dangers are present. Current is moving very fast.  Experience highly recommended.
